Police have questioned medical staff over the death of a newborn baby at a property near Te Puke, as well as members of the baby's family, including the 17-year-old mother.

A post mortem was carried out on Sunday on the body of the baby, who had died at a rural property early on Friday morning.

Detectives who have been speaking with family members say they are fully cooperating.

A forensic examination of the family home and the surrounding property is expected to be completed on Monday.

No charges have been laid, but police say they will seek expert medical and legal advice on the issue.
