Police say they believe a New Zealander missing in Australia is dead.

Gordon Tearonui Hamm lived in Mount Gambier in South Australia and was last seen on 17 July in Nelson in the neighbouring state of Victoria.

At a media conference on Thursday afternoon, Senior Sergeant Ron Iddles from Victoria's homicide squad said the 34-year-old was pulled from a car when stopped on a bridge last week.

"From the evidence that we have we know that he was severely beaten there, he was also shot and the evidence would indicate that he died at that location."

Police believe Mr Hamm was a passenger in a car driven by a woman when they were blocked by two vehicles on the bridge.

Mr Iddles said two men, aged 29 and 37, from Mount Gambia have been arrested.

South Australian police are also investigating and said this was not a random attack. All those involved are known to police.

Investigations are continuing while police try to find Mr Hamm's body.
