The Government is to install new luggage X-ray machines at international airports.

Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy told a horticulture conference on Tuesday that 11 new machines with better quality images will be installed at Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington and Queenstown airports.

They will replace the existing X-ray technology used to inspect checked-in and hand luggage of passengers arriving in New Zealand.

Mr Guy said it's the first step in an equipment replacement programme to strengthen the biosecurity system, along with recruiting more quarantine inspectors and dog handler teams.
