A New Zealand equestrian has been killed at a horse trial in England.

Tom Gadsby, 26, died as a result of an accident during the cross country phase of the Somerford Park international horse trials in Cheshire on Sunday.

British police say he was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities are still trying to contact his family.

Equestrian Sports New Zealand says the rider died following what is known as a "rotational fall" where both horse and rider fell together.

Chief executive Jim Ellis says he was a very experienced rider.

Mr Ellis says the rider had been based in the United Kingdom for two years and was well-known in the equestrian community.

He says it is a tragic day for the sport.

Somerford Park abandoned the competition following the incident.
