Fresh Nina search focusses on life raft

An air search is underway for a life raft thought to have been seen near Lord Howe Island in the Tasman sea.

The privately-funded flight is part of the continued search for the yacht Nina, which left the Bay of Islands on 29 May with seven people on board and has not been seen since.

New Zealand search and rescue abandoned its search last month.

Relatives and a public appeal in the United States have paid for aerial searches to continue.

Ralph Baird of EquuSearch told Morning Report they have been searching satellite images and in one of them found a yellow object west of Norfolk Island, which could be the Nina's life raft.

Mr Baird says he hopes Monday's search is successful because the private funds will dry up this week.

He says he still has hopes of finding the seven sailors alive.
