They said a man wearing a mask fired a sawn-off shot gun at a counter in the Dollars Deal store in Manurewa about 9.15am before taking a few items. No one was injured.

The police are looking for two offenders - the man who held up the shop and the driver of a stolen vehicle the pair fled in. The car was found around the corner from the store.

They said the robber was wearing a dark hoodie, black jeans and a dark beanie.

Witnesses said they saw a man holding what they believed was a rifle when he tried to rob the store, which is situated at the end of the mall carpark.

A mall security guard said the area was a hotspot for crime and, while cameras had recently been installed, further security measures were needed.

Shop staff were calm but in shock and were interviewed by police, the guard said.

The police are appealing for any witnesses to contact them.
