The new network is targeting people under the age of 30 and will be known as TheWireless.

It will not be available through traditional on-air broadcasts, but is instead designed to be accessed through mobile phones, tablets, laptops and desktop computers.

Radio New Zealand's chief executive Paul Thompson says the new service will provide younger New Zealanders with quality journalism that cannot be found elsewhere.

Mr Thompson says TheWireless will encourage informed debate and help under-30s have a say in decisions affecting them.

He says the service will bring Radio New Zealand's values and quality to an audience that it presently doesn't serve well.

TheWireless has received $197,000 from New Zealand on Air's digital fund to help develop its Fresh Voices strand, presenting new creative talent.

New Zealand on Air chief executive Jane Wrightson says the website gives younger people a stronger platform and voice and has the potential to become a very special part of New Zealand's culture.
