Portman sent text to friend before death, trial told

Hamilton woman Rae Portman sent a text message to a friend to say something dark was happening, just hours before the Crown says she was murdered.

The 33-year-old went missing in June last year and her body was found on a South Auckland farm in September.

Detective Carlye Rees has been reading intercepted phone records captured by police in their investigation into Ms Portman when she went missing.

The Crown says the text was in relation to a drug deal with Dean Addison, who had planned to have Ms Portman kidnapped. It was sent shortly before Ms Portman was bound and gagged.

The Crown says Paraire Te Awa carried out the kidnapping and later murdered Ms Portman in Hamilton. Mr Addison is also charged with kidnapping and faces drugs charges. Both have denied all charges.

On Monday, the Crown's main witness denied concocting a story to suit himself. Lee Rigby is serving time for his part in the kidnapping and has told the court he saw Mr Te Awa kill Ms Portman.

Rigby said he waited five weeks before talking to police and was found hiding at his ex-partner's home in Ardmore, a rural suburb in South Auckland.

The trial is in its second week and has been set down for four weeks. It is due to hear evidence from more than 80 witnesses.
