Serial sex offender Stewart Murray Wilson is allowed to be tried by a jury over charges that he breached his strict special release conditions.
Wilson served 16 years for multiple rapes of women, assault, drugging, ill-treating children and bestiality before being released to live in the Whanganui Prison grounds last year.
He was recalled to prison in April after it was alleged that he had a cellphone with internet capability when not allowed and had contacted a woman he should not have.
On Wednesday, the 66-year-old appeared in the Whanganui District Court to defend two charges.
Judge Chris Field agreed to his request that his case be heard by a jury.
Wilson remains in custody until his next court appearance on 9 January.
