Mayor disputes minister's comments on BERL report

9:01 am on 17 November 2013

Dunedin Mayor David Cull says Science and Innovation Minister Steven Joyce should read a report on an interim decision by AgResearch to move part of a research facility to Lincoln, before he passes judgement on it.

Dunedin City Council commissioned the report from BERL, an economic research consultancy.

The report said there is no evidence that centering the research at Lincoln and Palmerston North would provide any economic or scientific advantage for AgResearch.

Mr Joyce said the report is not objective and BERL often produces reports which support the view of those who commission them.

But Mr Joyce says he has not read the 12 page document and Mr Cull says he is in no position to criticise it.

Mr Cull says he understands the need for the Government to support the Canterbury economy at the moment, but it should not cannibalise the smaller regions to do so.
