Second round of charter school applications

8:41 pm on 21 November 2013

The Government has announced it will soon open a second application round for organisations wanting to set up charter schools.

Education Minister Hekia Parata says the round will have tighter priorities than the first, which resulted in the selection of five of the publicly-funded, private schools earlier this year.

Ms Parata says the next round of applications will favour primary schools and schools in areas where rolls are growing.

The round will be for schools opening in 2015 and their funding will be considered in the 2014 Budget, she says.

The schools are based on an American model known as charter schools, which the New Zealand Government is calling partnership schools.

They set their own pay, conditions and teaching arrangements, and are opposed by teacher unions and other education groups.

The five schools selected earlier this year will open in 2014.
