The first school has been connected to a fibre network funded by the Government.

Prime Minister John Key launched it at Massey Primary School in Auckland.

The connection is part of the $211 million Network for Learning, which provides schools with fast internet, uncapped data, content filtering and network security services.

Mr Key told pupils they will now be able to take as much information as they like from the internet and 10 times faster.

Associate Minister of Education Nikki Kaye said the programme is running early and 100 schools will be connected by the end of next term.

About 700 schools are expected to be connected by the end of 2014.
