Jury deliberating in electoral fraud case

2:21 pm on 9 December 2013

The jury at the trial of seven men accused of electoral fraud in Auckland are continuing their deliberations of 39 charges.

Daljit Singh, a real estate agent and senior member of the Supreme Sikh Council, failed in his attempt to win a seat on the Otara-Papatoetoe board in the super-city election in 2010.

It is alleged that he, along with six other men, sent personal details of 116 voters to authorities and registered them to the area where Mr Singh was standing.

The Crown says some of these people lived as far away as Tauranga or Timaru.

The defence lawyer for Mr Singh said he was a successful businessman who had no motive to commit electoral fraud.

The seven men all deny the charges.

The jury at the High Court in Auckland began considering their verdicts on Friday morning.
