A man has died in a forestry accident near Levin on Thursday morning.

The 20-year-old man was felling a tree when it landed on top of him about 6.45am at a property off State Highway 1 between Levin and Foxton.

Police, fire and ambulance attended and WorkSafe New Zealand is investigating.

The death is the 10th in the forestry industry this year and follows the deaths of two workers in separate incidents earlier in December.

WorkSafe is a stand-alone Crown agency responsible for reducing the death and injury toll in workplaces and began its work on Monday.
