A man had climbed onto a gantry on the bridge, backing up traffic in the central city and some of motorways.

The motorway just south of the bridge was briefly closed while police climbed up to arrest the man, who had been there since 11am.

Inspector Kerry Watson said police negotiators were not able to pinpoint why the man climbed the gantry and he will be assessed by mental health workers.

Police will then consider whether to lay any charges.

Auckland Transport said there were delays to bus services.
