Good response to new alcohol laws seen by police

Police say the response to new alcohol laws that force bars to close at 4am has been very good.

Under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act, bars have to close earlier and licensed premises will face fines if they sell drinks to people who the police think are intoxicated.

Inspector Ben Offner said the transition to the new laws has gone pretty smoothly.

He said it is still early in the change process, but there was no major disorder when people left bars in the early hours of Saturday.

There was also a drop in the number of calls to police communication centres in the north island .
