Auckland Zoo says a young kiwi attacked by a dog on the Coromandel Peninsula is still very sick, but in a stable condition.
The female kiwi, named Jo, was found by a hunter and underwent surgery on extensive infected wounds on Thursday.
A zoo spokesperson said the bites are being treated with two types of antibiotics and the bird is being given pain relief.
She says it has a long road ahead but is eating well, which is a positive sign.
