Gales are expected to strike inland areas of the South Island on Sunday and the lower North Island later.
MetService says strong northwesterly winds are preceding a front moving northward in the South Island.
It says severe gales are possible on Sunday night for Wellington and Wairarapa, with gusts of 120km perhour in exposed places.
A severe rain warning has also been issued for Fiordland and the Westland ranges.
