Since Queen's Birthday weekend in 2011, police have issued speeding fines to drivers caught travelling more than 4km/h over the speed limit during public holidays.

The usual tolerance is 10km/h over the limit.

The reduced tolerance accounted for nearly half of all speeding offences recorded for public holidays.

Police collected $5.7 million in fines for all speeding breaches during holidays and long weekends since 2011.
