A 26-year-old Greymouth man died when the car he was in crashed into the house on High Street at about 11pm Friday.

Police say a 28-year-old man is in Grey Base Hospital after being impaled in the abdomen during the crash. A 24-year-old is also in hospital with chest injuries.

Police say the crash happened after a patrol car had tried to pull over a white Subaru station wagon speeding on High Street in the West Coast town.

The car did not stop and the officer lost sight of it as it travelled around a bend in the road. When he came around the bend he found the car had crashed into a house on the left hand side of the street.

Police say the impact of the crash shoved the building sideways on its foundations and it needed structural support before the scene could be cleared on Saturday.

No one was in the house at the time.

A nearby resident who heard the crash said it is not uncommon for people to speed on High Street.

Police have launched an investigation and a serious crash investigator was at the scene on Saturday.
