Safety fences around red zone demolitions

11:25 am on 27 January 2014

Preparations have begun for contractors to start demolishing red zone properties on the Port Hills in Christchurch.

The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority says safety fences are being erected around the sites on Morgans Valley Road and Avoca Valley Road, where demolition will start this week on properties owned by the Crown.

In both cases, the authority says there is a risk of rockfalls, which must be managed by the contractors.

Freight containers will be in place to act as safe zones for the work crews, escape routes will be identified and spotters will watch for any warning signs of impending rockfall.

The Government has bought 306 properties on the Port Hills to date.
