Traveller numbers top 10 million

The number of people travelling in and out of New Zealand exceeded 10 million for the first time ever in year to December.

Statistics New Zealand said 5 million arrivals and 5 million departures from New Zealand were recorded.

The agency said 381,900 visitor arrivals recorded in December 2013 was the highest monthly total ever, surpassing the previous high of 364,200 in December 2011.

Over the year, visitor arrivals passed the 2.7 million mark for the first time, increasing 6 percent from the previous year.
