A foreign exchange dealer has been jailed for four years and three months after admitting to accessing his clients funds for personal benefit.

The Serious Fraud Office says Rene Alan Chalmers pleaded guilty to 14 charges at the Auckland District Court in August last year.

His company, Chalmers Cameron Investments Limited, was placed into voluntary liquidation in 2012 owing investors $1.5 million.

The charges include theft by a person in a special relationship, dishonestly taking or using a document and making a false statement.

They relate to trading foreign exchange and three property purchases in 2011 and 2012.

The SFO says many of Chalmers' initial clients were family members and friends.
