A man has been found dead and a woman is in hospital with critical injuries after an incident at a Palmerston North house.
The Armed Offenders Squad was called out after police were notified of yelling from a house in Russell Street about 7pm on Friday.
Police said it is too early to determine what caused the injuries to the man and woman, or what sort of weapon was involved.
The officer in charge of Manawatu CIB, Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Sheridan, said it is difficult to piece together what has happened and officers are speaking to witnesses.
The woman is in a critical condition in Palmerston North Hospital.
Police said they are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident and are trying to determine the relationship of the people involved.
The property would be secured overnight for a scene examination to be carried out on Saturday.
