Magma gives new clues to eruptions

Researchers at Victoria University have data that could be used to predict how quickly some volcanic eruptions occur.

A study by researchers at the university investigated Mount Tauhara, on the outskirts of Taupo.

The researchers looked at how long it took for molten magma to form and the time it took to reach the mouth of the volcano.

A senior lecturer at the School of Geography, Monica Handler, says the findings are important.

Dr Handler says other similar studies are being carried out overseas.
