Maori veteran dies aged 95

One of the last surviving members of the 28th Maori Battalion has died.

Reihana Rautahi died in Thames Hospital at the weekend. He was 95.

Mr Rautahi enlisted in B Company at the age of 23 and served in North Africa and Italy.

He was seriously wounded at the Battle of Monte Cassino in 1944 and left partly paralysed.

His funeral will be held in Paeroa at 11am on Wednesday.

There are now just 19 surviving members of the battalion.
