Businesses say hiring intentions up

Businesses say they intend hiring more people due to the strengthening economy but unions worry workers may miss out.

Official figures show the economy grew 3.1 percent in 2013 and analysts expect the pace to pick up further this year.

Economists say growth is broadening and it's not all about rebuilding Christchurch and higher dairy payouts.

Nevertheless, these factors, along with rising immigration, are expected to underpin activity this year, with some analysts predicting growth could exceed 4 percent in 2014.

Unions worry that rising economic prosperity won't be shared around, and say workers deserve higher pay rises than they've received in recent years, especially since mortgage costs will rise this year.

Businesses say employment is rising, and skilled workers are in demand.
