Insurance companies have paid $11.1 billion in Canterbury earthquake settlements, up to the end of February.

The Insurance Council said the amount comprises $7.359 billion in commercial payments and $3.743 billion in residential claims.

Chief executive Tim Grafton said more than three-quarters of all commercial claims have now been settled.

He said the total is a significant contribution to the region's economy.
