Extra mirrors on buses after death of boy

Ritchies Transport, the largest school bus fleet operator in the country, has added extra mirrors to 85 buses to prevent a repeat of the death of a boy on the West Coast.

The changes were revealed in Greymouth on Tuesday at the inquest for Mahuri Hemi Bettjeman-Manawatu, aged five.

The boy was run over and killed by a school bus that had just dropped him off in the town of Hector, north of Westport.

Witnesses said he ran alongside the bus and was run over when it turned a corner.

Ritchies Transport manager John Harvey told the coroner that immediately after the accident, the company fitted 85 buses with extra mirrors, to reduce the blindspot on both sides of its vehicles.
