The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research has issued its outlook for May to July.

Forecaster Chris Brandolino said the east coast of the North Island has the best chance of above average temperatures over the next three months.

But he said rain would continue to fall in areas already drenched by recent storms, including Canterbury.

Mr Brandolino said cold snaps and frosts are also expected as autumn advances into winter.
