The body of a former New Zealand policeman and husband of a Tongan princess shot dead in Hawaii will be brought to Auckland for his funeral.

A family member of Joshua Tu'iono Liava'a says he died after a shooting incident in Kahalu'u north of Honolulu.

It is understood the man accused of shooting the 65-year-old is Samuela Mataele, a nephew.

Police in Honolulu said an 18-year-old man is in custody and may face charges by the end of Wednesday.

The family member said Mr Liava'a's son will fly from Hawaii with the body to Auckland next Tuesday.

Mr Liava'a is the former husband of Princess Mele Siu'ilikutapu of Tonga. They married in 1969 in Auckland, but the marriage was later annulled by royal command.
