Berrymans accept compensation over bridge collapse

The lawyer for the former owners of a bridge which collapsed and killed a man, says they have reluctantly accepted a compensation settlement from the Government.

The army-built bridge to the King Country farm of Keith and Margaret Berryman collapsed in 1994, killing a beekeper.

A Coroner's hearing found they were largely responsible for the collapse but that finding was overturned by a High Court review in 2008.

The Berrymans' lawyer says they accepted a "take it or leave it" offer of $150,000 from the Government just before Christmas. However, they received no apology.

The Berrymans say they want a Royal Commission of Inquiry.
