Fog halts flights at Wellington airport

1:53 pm on 29 January 2010

Flights in and out of Wellington airport were halted for several hours on Friday morning due to heavy fog, disrupting the travel plans of thousands of people.

More than 3000 passengers on 28 flights were affected by cancellations and delays.

Some early outgoing flights were able to take off, and flights began landing again about 10.45am.

Air New Zealand and Pacific Blue hoped to rebook affected travellers on flights later in the day.

The disruption came at a busy time for the capital, where about 40,000 people flocked to an AC/DC concert on Thursday, and thousands more are expected at a second concert on Saturday.

About 30,000 spectators are expected at Trentham Racecourse in the Hutt Valley for the Wellington Cup on Saturday.

Some 4500 cruise ship passengers are in dock and the first teams for next weekend's Wellington sevens rugby tournament are starting to arrive.
