Cheetahs' dash for freedom short-lived

8:35 am on 5 February 2010

A Christchurch wildlife park is apologising to visitors who witnessed cheetahs free from their enclosure.

Orana Wildlife Park chief executive Lynn Anderson says three male cats swam across a river to escape through a hole in the fence on Thursday.

Mrs Anderson says about 100 people in the park were taken to safe areas and the cheetahs were recaptured within half an hour.

She says the fence will be replaced.
