Paul Sinclair, from Ashburton, was on the ferry when a fuel line burst.

He suffered a fractured back and had to be carried off the ferry on a surfboard.

His partner Anna Love, from Christchurch, suffered minor burns to her legs.

Mr Sinclair was flown to Darwin by air ambulance from Bali last night, and his family were expecting him to undergo an operation.

Indonesian authorities say 11 of the ferry's 129 passengers received burns, and eight suffered broken bones.
