Police searching for the killer of an Auckland taxi driver say they have identified the man seen getting into the taxi on the night the driver died, but believe he is now overseas.

Hiren Mohini, 39, died after what detectives have called a frenzied knife attack at about 1.30am on Sunday, 31 January, in Mt Eden.

Police have been searching for a man seen on security footage walking through the city centre before getting into the taxi.

Detective Senior Sergeant Hywel Jones says they now know who the man is and have been working with appropriate agencies during the past week, trying to locate him overseas.

He says a member of the public told them the man's identity but until now the police have kept their knowledge secret, fearing its release could jeopardise the investigation.

Detective Senior Sergeant Jones says he is disappointed that a television news outlet chose to reveal the details on Saturday evening.

The news item to which Mr Jones refers was the lead story on the 3 News 6pm bulletin.
