The Auckland Council has voted not to stage a referendum after considering the $1 million cost , and a possible clash with the Transport Accord being negotiated with the Government.

The referendum idea was studied partly to placate councillors unhappy with a council decision to pursue the introduction of a motorway charge in three years' time.

If a referendum were to be held as part of next October's local body election, it would have needed to be formally signed off next July.

That could precede by several months the Transport Accord negotiations aimed at agreeing a 30 year programme of projects, and trigger discussions with Government on new funding tools.
