Australia retains Chappell-Hadlee Trophy

Australia has won the fourth one day match in Auckland with six wickets and 17 balls to spare, holding on to the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy.

New Zealand again failed to bat for 50 overs and couldn't make the most of a good start at Eden Park on Thursday, posting a modest 238 in 44.1 overs, after being 120 for 1 with Brendon McCullum batting well.

The introduction of slower bowlers triggered a rash of soft dismissals, among them McCullum for 61.

Tailender Daryl Tuffey was the next-highest scorer, his career-best 34 from 17 balls, including four sixes.

Cameron White and skipper Ricky Ponting hit half-centuries to lead Australia to the series-clinching win.

White was unbeaten on 50 as Australia, chasing 200 to win off 34 overs in a rain-interrupted match, scored 202 for 4 with 17 balls to spare.

Ponting was in blazing form with 50 off 35 balls before he was leg-before to spinner Daniel Vettori who took 29 for 2.

Black Caps captain Daniel Vettori says the team made the same mistakes as it did in the losses in Auckland on Saturday and Hamilton on Tuesday.

"It was just about not putting enough runs on the board, losing wickets at crucial times, and putting ourselves under far too much pressure - and when you do that against Australia you get yourself in trouble."

The six-wicket win means Australia retain the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy ahead of Saturday's fifth game in Wellington.
