The police had been seeking the 47-year-old since yesterday, after a 50-year-old woman was attacked with a sword at her home.

They were alerted to his whereabouts after he was identified by members of the public in Mangere, who detained him until officers arrived.

He faces several charges, including wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and breaching a protection order.

Detective Senior Sergeant Ross Patterson said earlier today the woman's injuries were very serious.

"She has some injuries to her head and her arms as a result of the sword attack," he said.

"She will require significant treatment at the hospital but she's in a stable condition."

The man will appear in the Hamilton District Court tomorrow.
