A coastal area survey is due to begin this week in the Bay of Islands.
Land Information New Zealand says the survey is the first of the Government's 20/20 projects to map coastal resources so they can be managed better.
The main survey area covers 300 square km, contained inside a line from Cape Brett to Wiwiki.
The first phase of the project is expected to be completed by late November, with the second phase - a biological survey - expected to begin in May.
