The district health board (DHB) said the majority of those were admitted in the past two days.

It was yet to confirm whether the stomach bug the patients were suffering from was the highly contagious norovirus, but said it was prepared if it was.

The DHB said most of the patients are local residents, and is urging anyone who has had a stomach bug recently not to visit people in the hospital.
