A person has died in a house fire in Ashhurst, near Palmerston North.

Police along with four fire engines and and an ambulance were called to the to the Wyndham Street house just after 4am.
Fire Service area commander Mitchell Brown said when crews arrived flames were coming out of an upstairs bedroom.
He said the fire appeared to be concentrated around an open fireplace near the bottom of the stairwell in the two-storey house.
Police said the person found dead at the house had been the only person in the property.
They will be investigating the circumstances of the fire and the death.
