Police were called to a house in the suburb of Vogeltown about 6am today after reports of a dispute.

Police cordons on Carrington Street, from the junction with Huatoki Street to the roundabout at Tarahua road, are being lifted.

Residents inside the cordon had been told to stay home until contacted by police.

Brody Dolan, 19, was at home behind the cordon for about two hours with six family members before learning the police had made an arrest.

He said he was surprised to see armed police outside his family home this morning.

"I went out to go and get the paper from the top of the driveway and there were two police cars and two officers standing with rifles," he said.

"I sort of freaked out a little bit."

Police told him they were looking for a man and to go back inside and stay put, he said.

"It's not something that happens every day. It was a bit scary but the adrenaline was kicking in for everyone in the house."

Mr Dolan said he was relieved there had been an arrest. "We're all back up and running now ... it's calmed down a lot."

Vogeltown School said on its Facebook page that it was open this morning and that it was safe to go to school.
