A 23-year-old man charged with murder after a stabbing in West Auckland can be named.

Michael Tristan Ford appeared at the High Court today, where Justice Moore lifted name suppression.

Mr Ford is charged with murdering Ronald Clayton Karipa, 42, who died in hospital after an argument at a house in Glendene involving up to four people.

Mr Ford's lawyer opposed a media application to take photos, saying his client was threatened at an earlier appearance in the Waitakere District Court.

He argued publishing his client's image could affect a witness' recollections of events and impinge on fair trial rights.

Justice Moore declined the media application.

The trial is set for September next year.
