Woman critical after being found in paddock near car

The critical injuries of a woman found in a paddock south of Auckland probably weren't the result of a car crash, but police will not confirm she was stabbed.

The woman was found this morning after members of the public called to report a car, which appeared to have run off Morley Road in Waiuku, but had no one in it.

The woman was found critically injured in the nearby paddock, and has been taken to Auckland Hospital, where she underwent surgery.

Police are trying to work out what happened and how the woman was injured.

Inspector Mark Rowbottom said they wanted to hear from anyone who may have seen the woman's car, which is an older-model white Subaru Legacy station wagon with registration plate FDP494, between 6pm yesterday and 6am today.

Mr Rockbottom said the incident was not linked to a police call-out in the area last night.

He said the woman is in her twenties, and from the area.
