Woman in serious condition after high speed chase

12:08 pm on 6 December 2008

A woman is in a serious condition in hospital following a police chase through central Christchurch on Friday evening.

A man, believed to have been the driver of a car which was being pursued by police, was also seriously injured.

Inspector Alan Weston says the incident happened after police began chasing a Subaru, being driven at speed.

The chase was abandoned when the car went the wrong way along a one-way street and then struck a Toyota about 7.30pm on Friday.

A young woman in the Toyota was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Inspector Weston says the driver had every opportunity to stop and it's very serious when an innocent person is injured in this way.

The incident happened close to another six weeks ago, when a police pursuit led to a car narrowly missing a pedestrian and smashing through an office window in Durham Street.
