Substandard timber may affect 1500 Auckland houses

The Mayor of Waitakere says homeowners should be alarmed at the prospect that their homes may have been built with substandard timber.

It follows the launch of an investigation by a group of Auckland frame and truss manufacturers into the alleged use of understrength timber.

The timber is believed to have been used in up to 1500 Auckland homes.

Waitakere Mayor Bob Harvey says homes built with the faulty timber can be structurally insecure.

He says the non-loadbearing timber is not for structural applications and he will seek legal advice on Monday.
