Five youths injured in police chase crash

Five teenagers were injured after the car they were in crashed into two parked vehicles and overturned after a police chase in Auckland.

Police said they tried to pull the car over after it was seen driving dangerously on Great South Road in Papatoetoe about 4am.

The driver failed to stop and the car crashed a short time later.

Five young people, aged from 14 to 17, were in the car. One of three 14-year-olds was the driver.

All were taken to Middlemore Hospital - two with serious injuries and three with moderate injuries.

One was undergoing surgery, another was in a critical but stable condition, and two were transferred to Starship Hospital. One was discharged from Middlemore.

Great South Road between Watson Place and St George Street has been reopened after the crash.
