Storm cut power in Taranaki town

5:21 pm on 15 May 2010

A clean-up is underway south of New Plymouth after a tornado hit the town of Oakura.

Police in Taranaki say the storm damaged power lines and cut electricity to more than 1000 homes on Friday night.

Meanwhile, Metservice is warning of the chance of flash flooding as a band of heavy rain and squally thunderstorms moves over Bay of Plenty.

It says a few thunderstorms around the Bay, Rotorua, and Gisborne, could be severe with rainfall rates of 25mm an hour possible.

The forecaster says that could be enough to cause slips, or flash flooding in low lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys.
