Asian families advised to do homework before emigrating

Families planning to emigrate to New Zealand are being advised to investigate what life is like in this country, before they arrive.

A Families Commission report on the experience of Asian families moving to New Zealand, suggests parents are often unprepared for the ways they and their children will change.

Asians make up 9.2% of the population and the fastest growing ethnic group in New Zealand.

Families Commissioner Gregory Fortuin says younger Asians usually integrate quickly, while their parents worry this will make them lose respect for the older generation.

He says families should do some research and try to build on the things both cultures have in common.
